Ukrainians in Alabama are generally eligible for several benefits that are administered both privately and publicly. The office of the Alabama State Refugee Coordinator can help connect eligible clients to the resources for which they’re eligible.

Walk-In Office Hours

To meet with someone who can help an eligible client fill out benefits applications or connect them to resources, visit the Inspiritus office in Birmingham any Wednesday from 9 AM – 4 PM CST.
Inspiritus, Alabama Office for Refugees | 117 Southcrest Drive, Suite 104, Birmignham, AL 35209
If you are unable to attend office hours, you can connect with a benefits specialist remotely and complete an intake over email. Contact Sophia Crayton at sophia.crayton@weinspirit.org.

Available Benefits

  • Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA) – $537 per month for single adults, with less per individual for families of two or more. This benefit is available to clients based off their date of application and ends 12 months after their date of arrival.
  • Refugee Medical Assistance (RMA) or Medicaid – Adults with no minor children qualify for RMA, while all others qualify for Medicaid. RMA is available to clients based off their date of application and ends 12 months after their date of arrival.
  • Mainstream Public Benefits – All eligible clients can apply for mainstream public benefits, such as SNAP, TANF, SSI, or others. These often require a social security number or proof of application for social security number.

Eligibility Requirements

Typically, only Ukrainians who have been granted humanitarian parole are eligible for public benefits. Look for “DT” or “UHP” on immigration documents. Individuals who came to the United States through the Uniting for Ukraine (sometimes referred to as “U4U”) qualify. Those with visas, such as student or travel visas, do not qualify.
